Functions of the National Productivity Centre

The overall objective of the National Productivity Centre is to impart productivity consciousness into the Nigerian public and organizations so as to generate visible improvement in the quantity and quality of goods and services with the aim of enhancing the living standards of the citizenry.  Since its inception the Centre has embarked on the following functions.

 

·        Provision of consultancy and advisory services to management and workers of organizations aimed at utilizing to the fullest all available and potential resources for production;
 
·       Disseminating information on methods and programmes for improving productivity in all sectors of the economy;
 
·       Soliciting and accepting technical aids for schemes and projects designed for productivity improvement;
·       Encouraging the formation of Productivity Committees and establishing branches of the Centre in each State of Nigeria.
         
·        Conducting studies in both the levels of productivity and the contemporary method of improving productivity in all sectors of the economy;
 
·        Encouraging and assisting business enterprises to set up productivity schemes;
 
·        Liaising on a continuous basis, with the Centre for Management Development (CMD), Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) and other similar organizations considered relevant in furthering the Centre’s objectives by the Governing Council.

 

·        Promoting cooperation among similar organizations engaged in the promotion of productivity by liaising with national, regional and international organizations, associations and research institutes such as International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Asia Productivity Organisation (APO), European Association of National Productivity Centre (EANPC), Pan African Productivity Association (PAPA), etc.

 

The above functions are in consonance with the generic functions of  National Productivity Organizations (NPOs) the worldwide, which include;

 

(i)      Promoting Productivity Improvement and Productivity   

          Culture

The activities here involve instilling attitudinal change and creating awareness among people involved in productivity improvement.

 

(ii)           Assisting Enterprises in Productivity Improvement Through Building Their Capacities

This involves offering support to enterprises through training programmes, guidance and consulting on practical productivity improvement measures, providing information on methods and techniques (measurement methods, etc) related to productivity improvement.

 

(iii)         Acquiring, Processing and Disseminating Information

Acquire, process and disseminate information on productivity improvement strategies, approaches, methods and techniques as well as lessons from best practices from local and international experiences.

 

(iv)         Networking with Other Organizations involved in Productivity Improvement by Playing the Catalyst Role

The National Productivity Centre plays the role of a Catalyst and networks with other organizations for improved productivity.
