Introduction
There is indeed a growing anxiety in Nigeria about the low level of productivity of the economy.
The issue of low productivity in the manufacturing service sectors, public utilities, public service and others involve cultural, political and economic factors.
The Nigerian economy, with its huge labour force and considerable capital factor outlay, still shows symptoms of low productivity despite the various efforts by the government at improving the situation. The low level of output or production of goods and services in the national economy (in both quantity and quality) appears to be grossly out of tune with the high level of consumption of goods and services which is occasioned by a large population.
It therefore becomes expedient to find ways to encourage high output in the domestic production sector with a view to equating it with our consumption pattern. In this wise, the government is restructuring the economy to enhance performance and improve productivity.
Operating within an economy faced with serious productivity problems, the onus fell on the National Productivity Centre, as the apex government productivity institution, to conduct appropriate researches, develop and apply the right technical solutions to these problems.
.
Resolved to actualize its mandate, the National Productivity Centre is involved in addressing many of the identified productivity problems in the Nigerian economy. To this end, appropriate schemes have been developed by various departments to address the productivity problems confronting us as a people.
